A staircase is the part of an outdoor space you feel with your whole body. When every tread sits at the same comfortable rise and going, the stairs flow underfoot and you stop thinking about them. That consistency is also the first thing a buyer or a building inspector looks for.

Common questions
- Do you build stairs on their own, or only with a deck?
- Both. We build standalone external stairs and access steps as their own job, as well as stairs that come off a new or existing deck. Stairs are a speciality for us, not an afterthought bolted on at the end.
- What timber do you use for external stairs?
- Usually a durable hardwood like spotted gum or merbau for treads and stringers, or composite where low maintenance matters most. We match the stairs to the deck or the house so it reads as one piece of work.
- Will the stairs meet building rules?
- Yes. External stairs have rules on rise, going, landings, handrails and balustrade heights. We set them out to be comfortable underfoot and compliant, and sort any approval the work needs. (Specific figures confirmed against the current standards. TBC.)
- Can you build stairs on a steep or sloping block?
- That is often where we do our best work. Split-level yards, steep side accesses and changes in level are exactly the problems a well-designed staircase solves. We work out the rise over the run and build to suit the ground you have.
